12/7/2023 0 Comments Last episode of station 11![]() So we made adjustments to make a vacuum for young Kirsten to step into, like, “There’s a missing person here and it’s our sister, but we happen to have a young child. Thinking about not Frank and Jeevan alone in the apartment, but Frank, Kirsten, and Jeevan alone in the apartment, that story in the novel was about repairing old wounds, reinvestigating old dynamics, looking at hard decisions, but also reviving a love. It made it easier for me to see what the story was about, but I would say that it’s in harmony with Emily’s novel. “I was really interested in seeing the Symphony, the cult, and the museum all collapsed into one space, to watch the various conflicts that existed between those three points of view play out.” In other words, it’s about what we’re trying to hold onto right now. (Their leader, played by Mackenzie Davis, does a mean Hamlet, but she’s also handy with a knife.) It’s a story in which, rather than society being stripped to its bare essentials, surprising remnants of human culture remain, and Lisa Loeb’s “Stay” is passed down among the generations like a sacred text. John Mandel’s novel, falls in with the Traveling Symphony, a group of wandering players who bring music and Shakespeare to the scattered settlements that remain. Two decades after the fall of civilization, the series, which was adapted by Patrick Somerville from Emily St. Covering the onset of and the first 20 years after a flu outbreak that leaves only one in a thousand alive, the HBO Max series finds the people who are left not just struggling to survive but to find meaning in their new world. But Station Eleven is the rare, perhaps the only, post-apocalyptic story that might make you feel a little bit better about the end of the world. The first day we shot in Toronto, almost a year after COVID shut us down, we were all standing in the same apartment in a different country, resuming the story of Kirsten and Jeevan. It’s understandable if the last thing you want to watch during a pandemic is a TV show about a world laid waste by a pandemic. We put it on a stage in Chicago, shot one scene, and then we trucked it from Chicago to Toronto and put it back together. As far as the actual apartment, our production designer Ruth Ammon built that whole thing on a stage it's not blue screen. We shot at the building itself, they let us shoot down in the lobby and use the elevator. ![]() The idea in the show is that Lake Point is our lone tower of safety, but you can look out and see things like the plane that hit Navy Pier. Ruth, our production designer, would kill me if I didn't mention the architects John Heinrich and George Schipporeit. But it's also a cool building - it's a clover shape to maximize the window space of all of the apartments. My wife is actually from Chicago and her grandmother used to live there, so I have all these emotional connections thanks to her memories of that place. It's called Lake Point Tower, and it's the only structure in all of Chicago east of Lake Shore Drive. Hiro and I decided to move production to Toronto because it's the same ecosystem, the same lakes, and the book taking place there was a cherry on top. Ironically, after the pandemic came through and we were looking for a safer place to shoot - Chicago had some 70,000 active COVID cases during the summer of 2020 - we found Ontario. I do think the whole show is a love letter to the Great Lakes. I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, looking out across Lake Michigan and thinking it was a sea. I wanted to be able to do that, and Chicago is what I know. I think you can feel it in the book, in the way she writes the journeys through Toronto, that she deeply knows the place. Like Lakepoint Tower, and Thompson Center, and the way the El operates. I had lived in Chicago for 10 years, I knew it very intimately, and I knew that in order to tell the story right, we were going to need a bunch of architectural way points that mattered to Miranda's eye as an artist. That was the one thing that, before we started, I called Emily to seek out her blessing.
